Daily Bread, Inc. is led by a team of dedicated professionals committed to ensuring that no one in Brevard County faces hunger or homelessness alone. Collectively, our team brings nearly a century of experience in the fields of non-profit and serving the food-sufficient and homeless to Daily Bread, Inc. Guided by a passionate board of directors, our team works to implement the organization’s strategic plan.

Administrative Team
Kathleen N. Spears, PhD – Executive Director
Dr. Spears, a Pennsylvania native, joined Daily Bread as its executive director in January 2018 after moving to the Space Coast from Indianapolis, IN. Prior to becoming the organization’s fourth executive director in 30 years, Spears led a number of non-profit organizations varying in size from $300,000 to $11.8MM. Her prior work as a non-profit executive led to her being named one of Memphis’ Women of Influence; Indianapolis Business Journal’s 40 Under 40; Indianapolis Star’s Woman to Know; and Junior Achievement’s Best & Brightest in Non-Profit. Spears is passionate about strategically creating programs that improve the human condition and working in collaboration with the community. Her strengths are strategic plan development and execution, organizational leadership, and fundraising. Spears is the youngest of nine siblings and has experienced hunger and homelessness in her past. Today, her three favorite things are shoes, coffee, and her sister’s dog – a French Mastiff named Sir Winston Churchill.


Peggy Sowders – Director, Facilities & Operations
Kansas City, Missouri native Peggy Sowders has an extensive background in non-profit and government affairs. Prior to relocating to Melbourne in 2015, Peggy worked as the Senior Programs Specialist for the City of Independence and previously as the director of social services and operations for an independent living facility in Kansas City. Peggy began with Daily Bread in 2015 as a volunteer in the Food Distribution Center. At the start of 2017 – after proving her abilities to manage multiple competing projects, people, budgets, and processes with ease – Peggy became the Food Distribution Center Manager. In her current role as Director, Facilities & Operations, she oversees human resources, accounting, vendor contracts and relations; as well as managing all four of Daily Bread’s properties. Married to Dave for 37 years, Peggy’s highlights in life are her 2 grandchildren, reading, and gardening.


Janet Price – Director, Institutional Advancement & Communication
Janet Price joined Daily Bread, Inc. as its Director, Institutional Advancement & Communications in July of 2015. During that time, Janet has been instrumental in assisting the organization in growing its income from special events and improving its visibility in the community.  Prior to joining Daily Bread, Janet worked in development at Florida Institute of Technology and in programming at Aging Matters.  She has been an active part of the Melbourne Community for more than 23 years having served Florida Wildlife Hospital, Friends of Melbourne Beach Library, Gemini and West Shore PTO in volunteer capacities; and recently completed WeVENTURE’s “Athena Women’s Leadership Series.” She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Old Dominion University. She and her husband Tom are parents to three beautiful children and a German Shepard rescue named “Max.”

Omar Powell – Manager, Dining & Food Services Program
A native of New York City, Omar Powell moved to the Melbourne area nearly 21 years ago. His career with Daily Bread began in 2010 when he volunteered as a cook in the dining facility. In 2012, after demonstrating his knowledge and passion for culinary arts combined with his desire to make positive change in the community, he was hired as a part-time assistant manager, overseeing volunteers, menu development, and leading training efforts. Powell became the manager of dining and food services in 2015 and is now responsible for leading our dining facility, working in close partnership with food distribution and food rescue, and is an integral part of the leadership team.  Prior to joining Daily Bread, Omar served as a chef at Florida Air Academy and in assisted living facilities. He earned his certification as a chef from the Culinary Institute of America. Omar is a music lover and enjoys watching his favorite football team, the NY Giants as well as spending time with his family.

Dave Hutchinson – Assistant Manager, Food Distribution Center
Born in the small seaside town of Duxbury Massachusetts that is located between Boston and Cape Cod, Dave Hutchinson has been a member of the Daily Bread team since 2015. He grew up enjoying the beach, sailing on the bay and water skiing in the back marsh.  His love of the water and wanting to travel led him to the Navy.  After three ships, four shore commands and twenty years, Dave retired as a Chief Petty Officer.  Prior to joining Daily Bread, he worked in security at Merritt Island High School and later managing Habitat for Humanity’s “Restore.”  Currently, Dave oversees our Food Distribution Center, managing nearly 2 million pounds of donated and purchased food a year; our bicycle repair program, and our food drives. He loves spending time with friends and families and works off hours at his daughter’s 7-11 convenience store.
